Hot 1: Construction of Polycrystalline Silicon Production Facility in Oman
United Solar Polysilicon (FZC) SPC in Oman has commenced the construction of a polycrystalline silicon production facility in the Sohar Port Free Zone, located between Dubai and the Omani capital of Muscat. According to local Omani media, the project is valued at over $1.35 billion. Spanning 160,000 square meters, the new factory is expected to start operations next year, producing 100,000 metric tons of high-quality metallurgical silicon annually.
Saleh bin Said Masan, the Deputy Minister for Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion in Oman, responsible for commerce and industry, stated that this is the first project of its kind in the Middle East. He mentioned that the project is expected to increase processing capacity in the coming years, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future for the Sohar Port Free Zone.

Hot 2: Global Solar Energy Government Tenders Reach 61GW
According to Wood Mackenzie’s data, solar photovoltaics were the highest awarded renewable energy in global government tenders in 2023. Last year, despite facing industry headwinds, tight logistics, and an energy crisis, the installed capacity of renewable energy obtained through government tenders worldwide was 137GW, marking a 10% increase compared to the previous year.
Solar photovoltaic power won the most in government tenders, reaching 61GW, accounting for 44% of the total. This is a decrease from 59% in 2022. In 2023, solar photovoltaics, onshore wind (34GW, accounting for 24% of the total), and offshore wind (31GW, accounting for 23% of the total) comprised about 91% of the allocated capacity. The remaining 9% was made up of hydropower, biofuels, geothermal, concentrated solar power, and tidal technologies.

Hot 3: Brazil’s Photovoltaic Installation Capacity Reaches 40 GW Milestone
As of last week, solar power accounted for 17.4% of Brazil’s electricity structure. Photovoltaic systems with a capacity of 75 kW and below constitute about 50% of the total electricity generated.
According to the latest data from the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (ABSolar), the operational photovoltaic installed capacity in the country has exceeded 40 GW.
The industry organization reported that approximately 27.5 GW of this capacity comes from distributed photovoltaic generation systems, including all Brazilian generation units with a capacity of 5 MW and below.
In the total power generation, small and micro power plants with capacities of 75 kW and below account for 22.7 GW, distributed across 2.4 million systems.
Brazil has around 12.5 GW of utility-scale solar power capacity. ABSolar revealed that solar power currently makes up 17.4% of Brazil’s electricity structure. In just the first two months of this year, the country added 3 GW of solar power capacity.
Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of ABSolar, stated: “In addition to accelerating the decarbonization process of economic activities and helping to combat global warming, solar energy also plays an increasingly strategic role in enhancing the competitiveness of the productive sector, achieving energy independence, and promoting national prosperity and development.”
