Hot 1: World Record for TOPCon Solar Cells

Recently, Yidao New Energy received a certification report from the National Photovoltaic Industry Metrology Test Center (NPVM) for their latest N-type TOPCon high-efficiency solar cell. This cell, equipped with Yidao New Energy’s independently developed large-area (333.8cm²) TOPCon 4.0 technology, achieved a new record open-circuit voltage of 735mV, surpassing Yidao New Energy’s previous record of 730mV set in May this year. This marks a significant achievement in open-circuit voltage for TOPCon solar cells globally.

Yidao New Energy has been dedicated to the development and industrialization of N-type TOPCon technology since its establishment, achieving technological breakthroughs across four generations of technology, from 1.0 to 4.0.

The open-circuit voltage has continuously improved, from an initial 701mV to the current record-setting 735mV, indicating a significant leap in innovative battery passivation structure technology.

Dr. Song Dengyuan, Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of the SEMI Standard Technology Committee at Yidao New Energy, stated that open-circuit voltage is a core technical indicator of solar cells, signifying the potential for efficiency improvement.

From TOPCon 1.0 to 4.0, Yidao New Energy’s TOPCon cells have increased their open-circuit voltage by about 35mV. In the past year alone, the increase exceeded 15mV, far outpacing other types of cells. This demonstrates that TOPCon cells have significant potential for efficiency enhancement.

The cells certified by third parties are equipped with TOPCon 4.0 technology, integrating “four new” features: a new carrier transport mechanism, new cell structure design, new metallization innovation technology, and new material applications.

The laser high-throughput carrier-induced metallization technology plays a significant role in enhancing cell efficiency, showcasing Yidao New Energy’s leading integrated innovation capabilities.

Hot 2: Bangladesh Approves 1.5 GW Solar Project

The Bangladeshi government approved electricity tariffs for photovoltaic projects of 200 MW in November and 310 MW in October.

In November, authorities in Bangladesh approved the development of two 100 MW solar projects in the Feni region in the southeast and the Mymensingh region in the central-north.

Xizi Clean Energy Equipment Manufacturing Co., Ltd. of China will collaborate with Bangladeshi garment manufacturers Cassiopea Fashion and Cassiopea Apparels to build the photovoltaic project in the Mymensingh region, with a 20-year electricity tariff of $0.10 per kWh.

The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will partner with an unnamed Chinese investor to construct another solar power plant in the Sonagazi township of Feni. This power plant’s 20-year operational tariff is also $0.10 per kWh.

Hangzhou Boiler Group Co., Ltd. of China and MAX Infrastructure Ltd. of Bangladesh were authorized in October to construct a 180 MW solar project in the Jamalpur region. The BPDB will purchase electricity from this plant at a rate of $0.0999 per kWh.

Another project approved in October is a 130 MW photovoltaic array in the Mongshiganj region, to be constructed by a joint venture between Energon Renewables (BD) Ltd and PWR Energy Trading LLC.

In recent months, Bangladeshi authorities have approved several large-scale photovoltaic projects to expand the share of renewable energy in the national electricity structure and achieve the country’s energy and climate goals. The increase in the number of projects may be due to new measures introduced by Bangladesh to assist domestic independent power producers in building and operating renewable energy power plants.

In the past seven months, the Bangladeshi government has approved over 1.5 GW of solar installation proposals. Nasrul Hamid, State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, stated that the scale of projects currently under construction in Bangladesh exceeds 1.2 GW.

Hot 3: European Union to Phase Out Fossil Fuel Boilers by 2040

The European Parliament and Council reached a temporary agreement yesterday, agreeing to phase out fossil fuel boilers and other infrastructure proposals aimed at improving energy efficiency over the next 20 years. The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) supports this announcement.

Once the temporary agreement reached yesterday by the European Parliament and Council is formally adopted, fossil fuel boilers will be “gradually” phased out by 2040.

The European Commission stated that once the agreement takes effect, subsidies for the installation of fossil fuel boilers will also stop before 2025, public buildings will need to achieve on-site zero emissions by 2028, and other types of buildings are expected to do so by 2030.

The announcement has the support of the Heat Pump Association (EHPA) based in Brussels, Belgium. The association calls for heat pumps to be the “preferred” heating and cooling equipment by 2030.

Thomas Nowak, Secretary-General of EHPA, said, “Setting a clear deadline for the cessation of fossil fuel heating in European buildings can guarantee consumers’ right to know and provide direction for the heating industry. This ensures that any investment in heat pump solutions is in line with future trends.”

He noted that once the policy is officially adopted by the European Parliament and Council, it will create “thousands of jobs” in Europe.

Hot 4: UAE Consensus on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels

A day after “overtime,” the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) concluded in Dubai, UAE, on the 13th of the local time.

The conference was originally scheduled to end on December 12, but before the negotiation deadline arrived, delegates from various countries failed to reach an agreement on the future of fossil fuels.

Intense negotiations ensued that night on whether to include “gradual reduction” or “gradual phase-out” of fossil fuels in the text, forcing the conference to be “postponed.” Eventually, delegates agreed on a roadmap for transitioning away from fossil fuels, a first in the history of UN climate change conferences.

The conference reached the “UAE Consensus” on multiple issues, including the first global stocktake of the Paris Agreement, mitigation, adaptation, finance, loss and damage, and a just transition, marking an important milestone.

However, the agreement did not directly mention the long-standing call for the “gradual phase-out of oil, coal, and natural gas.” “We should be proud of our historic achievement,” said COP28 President Sultan Jaber in his closing plenary speech, describing the day’s agreement as “a strengthened, balanced, but undoubtedly historic package of accelerated climate action, which is the UAE Consensus.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated in a declaration that keeping the global temperature increase within 1.5℃ is one of the milestone goals set by the Paris Agreement. To achieve this goal, all fossil fuels must be gradually phased out, and more and more countries are recognizing this.

The negotiators at this conference also committed to doubling renewable energy capacity and improving energy efficiency by 2030, and made progress in climate adaptation and financing.
